Philadelphia: The Birthplace of Healthcare

Those of us who live in Philadelphia take the preeminence of healthcare here for granted.  After all, one in five American physicians does some portion of his or her training here.

Did you know, though, that Philadelphia is also famous for many healthcare ‘firsts’?  For example Dr. Philip Physick created the first health insurance and HMO right here in 1792.

This fascinating American Public Radio feature explores this, and other aspects of the city’s rich healthcare history more thoroughly through podcasts, articles and other interactive media.

About Bryan Stoudt

On my personal website (bryanstoudt.com), I help Christians follow Jesus in a noisy, broken world. I also have the privilege of helping Philadelphia's healthcare students and professionals do this as Area Director for the Christian Medical & Dental Associations (CMDA). More information at cmdaphiladelphia.org. On a personal note, I'm fortunate to be married to my wonderful wife, Sharon. Together, we have four fantastic children. In my spare time, I enjoy roasting coffee, running, reading and learning foreign languages.
